TJ : Clunk When I Accelerate 05-26-12, 12:04 PM. From a dead stop, I feel, and hear a clunk , from the rear, of the jeep , when I accelerate . I just spent 2 hrs, checking the rear suspension. All the control arm mounts are tight. The axle housing is tight with the suspension. I checked the driveshaft.
9/11/2002 · my tj has developed an odd clunk clunk clunk when I’m accelerating . the u-joints ALL look good and I have locking hubs on the front. the lockers are ARB’s ad are certianly disenguaged. the suspension is a RE long arm kit ad I have driven it about 5000 miles on the road and about 80 hours on the trail. the tranny is an nv4500 and the transfer case is an atlas II.
5/2/2009 · A buddy of mine had a similar issue a few weeks ago on a TJ . It turned out the rear pinion nut had backed off. when you accelerate the pinion gear angle would drive itself out toward the tranny and would run closeto correct position. When you let off the power the pinion sinks back into the diff and there was an audible clunk .
9/25/2013 · Happens only when shifting to the 2nd gear, either from 1st or down from 3rd. If acceleration pedal is released before it’s shifted from 1st to 2nd, it will do it anyway and causes a clunk feeling as if someone hit me from the back. Downshifting clunk is more difficult to reproduce but does happen often on stop-go traffic.
8/28/2012 · Been experiencing a hard CLUNK or jolt lately when shifting the WK from Reverse into Drive. Seems like it is coming from front end but might be rear. Have also had occasional hard downshift when coasting downhill with no acceleration (not pressing gas pedal). Any clues what I might be experiencing? Currently at 55K miles.
2/2/2005 · The clunking starts as I accelrate and dies away after 20-25. It also happens over small bumps and any road imperfection. I can feel it in my feet as something tapping slightly. The mods I see affecting this are 1 MML and the jeep medic skids. I have looked under the jeep and no luck so far.
